REVIEWS:

'MAD TIGERS AND BEARS'
- Ewen Moore (Co-founder and editor of Hearsay Magazine and former theatre and music editor of Creative Week newspaper), 2008:

"Mad Tigers and Bears is a new play by Stephen M Hunt. It was performed as a rehearsed reading at the intimate Brockley Jack Theatre for one night only but, on the strength of this performance, a full production is surely waiting in the wings...
Intercut with this is the drama of a young couple, Gina and Barry,(Emma Fletcher and Robert Wainwright) who are obviously falling badly out of love. As they twist knives into each other, the electricity and tension between them crackles with an almost tangible menace...
Barry seems to be the calm and ordered half of the pair and Robert Wainwright convincingly charts his descent from serenity into chaos."

'THE DEMON WITHIN'
- MJ Simpson, www.mjsimpson.co.uk, 2008:

"The Demon Within is a beautiful-looking film and thoroughly professional. It has simply stunning cinematography and a uniformly excellent cast whose acting talents are considerably greater than one normally sees in low-budget indies. The characters are well defined, the dialogue naturalistic. The whole film is very well directed...
The first house Tom and Debbie find belongs to the enigmatic Lincoln (Robert Wainwright), who has neither car nor phone but offers them a meal and a bed for the night. Debbie accepts graciously but Tom is suspicious. Suave and charming, Lincoln seems to be modelled on Louis Jourdan's performance in the BBC production of Count Dracula...
Technically the film can't be faulted. The lighting and camerawork by DP Alex Ryle is superb, especially in the atmospheric scenes with Lincoln."

'PLAGUE! THE MUSICAL'
- Helen Raw, whatsonstage, www.whatsonstage.com, 2008:

"Plague! The Musical is one of the most ridiculous, outrageous, over the top and watchable pieces of new musical theatre I have seen in a long time. The bubonic plague is not the most obviously comedic event in history but the blend of music and exceptionally corny jokes makes this a Spamalot-esque joy to watch.

The fine cast give their all and the energy does not let up for a second as the story unfolds of Clive, an out of work actor who falls in with bad company and ends up getting blamed for kick-starting the plague. Silly stuff, but it serves as a suitable frame on which to hang a plethora of medieval witticisms. Special mention must go to leading lady Catriana Sandison whose strong singing voice is complemented by fine comic timing, while her opposite number Porl Matthews makes for an excellent, if slightly overly-camp Clive. And as the Alchemist (the father of Clive's beloved), Robert Wainwright is beyond ridiculous but incessantly amusing.

Although a little long at 1hr 45mins, writers/directors Matthew Townsend and David Massingham capably ensure that this well-oiled machine remains slick, upbeat and energetic throughout. If you're looking for a good laugh, some great singing, a generous smattering of 'dad' jokes and a talented ensemble having a whale of a time, you could do a lot worse than this."

'PLAGUE! THE MUSICAL'
- Musical Theatre Matters, www.musicaltheatrematters.org.uk, 2008:

"The Bubonic Plague, which hit London several times in its long history, is not a subject matter which would usually be considered for a Musical Theatre treatment. However, it's here at the Edinburgh Fringe - cunningly titled Plague! The Musical...

An enthusiastic cast... with particularly fun performances from Robert Wainwright (The Alchemist) and Daniel Tyler-Smith (Pied Piper/Begger Lord)."

'THE ADVENTURES OF A PLUMBER IN OUTER SPACE'
- - MJ Simpson, www.mjsimpson.co.uk, 2008:

"The Adventures of a Plumber in Outer Space... is not just a return to the good old days of fine, upstanding British rubbish but is also an entry in the pantheon of British science fiction films. It's not the first sci-fi sex comedy made here either...

Diana Manthey (who was actually pregnant at the time) plays frustrated housewife Mrs Zucker, with Robert Wainwright (who played the demonic Lincoln in Harold Gasnier's The Demon Within) as her police sergeant husband who comes home early and catches his Mrs hiding a plumber under the bubbles in her bath... Most of the cast are good, some are very good...

Jan Manthey and the curious Karno clan have done a marvellous job in bringing the 1970s British sex comedy into the 21st century. The mannered acting, the desperately weak jokes, the half-hearted eroticism...

If you enjoyed the films to which this paid tribute, then it goes without saying that you will love The Adventures of a Plumber in Outer Space... Quite apart from anything else, this is something very different among all the indie stuff that's out there. It's smashing...

Anyway, I wholeheartedly recommend The Adventures of a Plumber in Outer Space and I look forward to Jan Manthey's further work as he continues to drag British independent cinema kicking and screaming into the mid-1970s."

'I AM NOT AN I'
- Paul Bamlett, The Evening Standard, 2008
"This deeply funny and strangely gripping new play by Stephen M Hunt features a strong cast. The tale of a group of people seemingly trapped in a cyclical nightmare on Rome's Spanish steps is the strongest piece yet from this emerging and engaging plawright.

With commanding performances from Hildegard Neil and Ben Onwukwe ,the participants in this beguiling quest for the truth seem destined to repeat their mistakes. With a nod to Dario Fo and a tincture of Dennis Potter this is a must see show for those who need a bit of grit in their theatre.

Robert Wainwright is neurotically spot on as Barry and Emma Fletcher's Gina grows in stature as the play progresses. Edward D'arcy Hatton's seemingly unflappable Marco adds a subtle touch of farce at the critical moments.

This is a unique and curiously moving piece of theatre and a truly memorable night out."

'I AM NOT AN I'
- Henry A. Winkler, Time Out, 2008

'Absurdist theatre at its best'. Four stars.
"If the rave reviews by Hearsay magazine's Ewen Moore and Extra! Extra!'s Tim Jeeves for this new play 'I Am Not An I' were anything to go by, then I was determined to take a look at the play, which had received such high acclaim for its writer Stephen Hunt and cast of actors...

The manipulative Barry, played by Robert Wainwright, is very watchable as Wainwright skilfully swaps from being cold-hearted and aloof towards Gina in the first half and in the second act warm and coy towards Not-an-I and Pops, as he tries to extrapolate information from them both. He does this, as we later discover, in order to steal Pop's research as his own, thus intertwining the characters' lives and allowing the two worlds to collide...

As I made my way down to the bar during the interval, I was greeted with much talk about the play. Whilst people were of mixed opinions as to how the second half would draw all the clues found in the first half together, one thing was certain, everyone had been thoroughly entertained by the first act and by the actors' portrayal of these complex characters and all were intrigued and keen to get back to their seats to discover the plot's resolve...

Stephen Hunt has proved himself to be a writer with a successful career ahead of him. This play must surely be the first in line of many achievements for Hunt and is a great achievement on its own merit for any new writer. 'I Am Not An I' succeeds in entertaining the audience by keeping them gripped to their seats with a roller-coaster of emotional highs and lows and new discoveries, which is surely the aim of any good play, whilst also keeping the actors on their toes with challenging characters to get to grips with.

A well-written and clever play by new playwright Stephen Hunt, which will leave you inspired for a long time after you have left the theatre, 'I am not an I' allows the audience to experience an array of emotions from tears, laughter to the completely absurd through the journey of this play.

'I Am Not An I' is absurdist theatre at its best. I highly recommend anyone with an interest in theatre to not miss this play."

'A SONG FOR EUROPE' original studio cast recording
- Dress Circle, Covent Garden 2009: http://www.dresscircle.co.uk/product.asp?StockID=35432

"Having been one of the few to have seen this show, I feel I can be somewhat objective and fair minded in my review of the songs. The style is Neo Classical with a feel that is beautifully Abbaresque. It is a genre in its own right, that has an individual style but completely unique with differing and diverse melodies. The lyrics are generally very honest and thankfully lacking the syrup that one has come to expect of recent new musicals. The Overture sets you up as to what to expect from the rest of the album… it starts as a lullaby through to the robust and finishes with a delightful sung refrain. Fatherhood is as clever as clever can be, followed by the beautifully constructed Departure which has a sister song The Plan to finish off act one. Strange But True, A Family At Last and The World I Left Behind are the mainstay of act one and are stand alone songs, though in saying this the remainder are still very clever and entertaining.

Act Two comes in with a bang… Moment of the year is a thumping Stock Aitken & Waterman type song, such is the diversity of this album. The three big chorus numbers, Beautiful New Day, The Big Day and Finale are thoughtful and uplifting, and fit well amongst the acts bigger songs. Everyone is free to change their mind is a nice soft buffer to Moment Of The Year, but for me, having seen the show, the back to back Reconciled & My Pretty One (both in the same scene) are musical bliss. My personal favourites? Don't Bite The Hand… simple, uplifting… just perfect, and last but not least Oceans, meant to be a Eurovision entry within the shows storyline, it ironically is possibly the best Eurovision song that has never been entered. All in all… not a lot to pay for this level of musicality!"
